Speech Blubs – speech therapy app - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

The idea started because all founders had problems with their speech when they were young. One of them is a developer so that definitely helped. We slowly grew and are now a team of 20 people and we can make everything on our own!

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

The most challenging aspect would be developing real-time face recognition and speech recognition algorithms and mechanics that work correctly and fast enough on devices with space and processing power constraints.

How long have you been working on this app?

The app just recently celebrated its 2nd birthday!

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

Our app is a speech therapy app. This means our primary focus was to develop an app that would be educational but at the same time fun and engaging so it keeps a child interested in interacting with it. In the beginning, we focused on children with autism and Down syndrome, so we also implemented topics relevant to them (how to recognize and express feelings, for example). At the same time, we didn't want children to only improve speech but also to learn about everything else that is important (so we included sections on animals, objects, stars, dinosaurs, things in a home and much more).

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

There are a couple of things we are really proud of! The first one is a video modeling feature, where children in videos say words, rhymes, puzzles, sing songs,... and children are really engaged by it and willing to mimick a lot. We know children prefer to mimick their peers a lot more than adults and this feature is something that we are really proud of. The second one is speech recognition - we implemented a speech recognition instead of just voice recognition. This means our app now recognizes speech and the pronunciation of words, so we can help children learn correct pronunciation and help them progress through the app. The third one would be Sentence building - this is a feature that is being implemented. This will take Speech Blubs on to a whole new level, as children will no longer only learn to make sounds, produce words but also form logical sentences. It will be really fun and children will have the option to create their own story with their own outcome. Last but not least, one aspect we are really proud of is the fact that Speech Blubs was designed and developed in close cooperation with many Speech and Language pathologists, making it the best speech therapy app on the market.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

The next thing is the implementation of the Word building section. It will be an amazing addition to Speech Blubs as it will increase the educational value and create a next step in the learning curve of children. Our app is also constantly updated with new features and especially new content (we are always adding new sections, so children can learn about different stuff important to their development).
