Learn Languages for Free – FunEasyLearn - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

We actually did. Both my co-founder and I had some prior experience in product development before we started this project. Our experience was in a completely different field, but it was a solid one, and so, we had some idea about what we were doing when we've started developing our own app.

But, to be fair, we now understand that the knowledge we then had was actually the bare minimum of what we really needed, so we had to learn every single day along the road, to be able to keep up and develop a great product.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

There were a few actually. But, I think, the most challenging aspect of developing a language learning app is to know when to stop.

So, when it comes to language learning, there are so many things you want to and need to integrate into one app, that at a certain point it stops being fun and easy and becomes frustrating and confusing. So, aside from many other technical difficulties, one of the hardest challenges, was to make a really useful app that provides a lot of information and features, but, at the same time is still user-friendly and super intuitive. To be frank, to this very day, we're still working on that.

Andrian Andronic, the interviewee, is the CEO and the Co-founder of the FunEasyLearn company.
FunEasyLearn makes language learning apps that focus on vocabulary building. At the moment, the FuneasyLearn apps hold the record on the market in what concerns language combinations and content.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

I like all the apps that keep me focused and organized:
1. Asana - Helps me to keep track of all of my tasks and give out tasks of my staff;
2. Calendar - For the obvious organizational reasons: appointments, meetings, etc.;
3. Fast Note Pad - for the times I have to remember an idea or put something down really quickly.

How long have you been working on this app?

We have launched our very first app in 2013. A lot has changed since then, and we've managed to create many new apps, but if we speak about our latest app "Learn Languages - FunEasyLearn", which is the best combination of all our previous versions, we've been working on it for about 2 years.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

I'd like to start with a short story here.
Back in 2012, we were looking for an app that would help us enhance our vocabulary in English. We were surprised not to be able to find an app precisely for that. Not to mention the fact that our native language is Romanian, and, obviously, there was no app at all that would give us the chance to learn English from Romanian. So, having some background in product development, we’ve decided to make a simple app that would help people learn new words from their native language. It quickly turned into a business idea, and thus we started our FunEasyLearn journey.

As soon as we launched our first app, we realized that our vision is exceptional. Our app had just 5 languages and few words, but people liked it so much that we've got a boom of downloads. So, we thought that it was a great opportunity to create a vocabulary-building app for the speakers of as many languages as possible. Years later, we hold the record number of languages on the market- 34 courses that can be learned from 62 native languages.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

We usually try not to get into the whole comparison thing, because we are a vocabulary-building app, while our major competitors on the market claim they have a holistic approach to language learning. Besides, we are mainly concerned with the opinions and requests of our users, and this is what drives us the most.

But, even so, we do know our strengths and we like showing them off:

1. We’ve developed 34 language courses, that can be learned from 62 native languages (which is more than the most apps on the market have);

2. We’ve compiled complex courses - alphabets with reading rules, 6,000 words, and 5,000 sentences (more content than most of the apps on the market have);

3. We’ve designed 11,000 illustrations & GIFs for our courses (whilst most apps use stock photos or non-related illustrations & animations);

4. We’ve got audios recorded by native speakers in professional studios for all of our courses (while many other apps use robotized pronunciations);

5. We’ve implemented compels features, like Review, Search, Favorites, Stats, Hands-free Mode, Hide What You Know, Learn Just to Speak, etc. (whilst other apps usually have not more than 3 features).

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

Well, even though our app is very rich in features, we obviously have a plan we are trying to keep up to.

We are not going to reveal the big plan, because that would take all the intrigue out of it, but we would like to share with you the features we are going to launch next.

So, the next features to be expected from the FunEasyLearn app:
1. Placement Test (already in Beta-testing) - a feature aimed to test the vocabulary level of the users before they start learning.
2. Leaderboard - a feature that will allow the users to compare their learning progress with the progress of other users.
3. Global Challenge - a feature that will allow the users to take part in monthly challenges and compete with their friends and other users.

Aside from that, we will continue adding new languages and new levels of words & sentences, so that we would reassert the status of the app which holds the record number of language combinations and the richest content on the market.

Some other plans a little farther down the road include adding a completely new way of enhancing one's vocabulary. Something that would continue the logical chain: Alphabet, Words & Sentences.
