LEADERS – The combined strategy game - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

The first version of LEADERS (2013) was a web app because we had some years of experience in coding web applications especially web apps for Facebook. We choose this way because it was easier and faster to see how people interact with the app, what they like, and whatnot.
In 2015, we switched to Unity and we have developed a completely new version of the app. In the last years, we have improved this version with our team step by step. All of our developers have years of experience with unity and game design/development.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

The app is part of the hybrid strategy game (boardgame + app) LEADERS, so the most challenging aspect was the interaction between the physical and digital game elements. We had to find answers to questions like How to transfer the data, how will this affect the usability, How will our players interact, and we have also to discuss the hardware specification for each component.
Another important aspect is that you can play the game either with a single or multi-device and you can switch between these two modes during the game – This affects the game sequences and gameplay a lot.

There are hundreds of millions of apps out there, and that’s really hard to pick some out. I like social networks and messaging apps very much because they have changed the way how people stay in contact.
I also love to play classic board games on my mobile phone, so settler is one of my favorites. My hidden gem is Zenkit – A platform to collaborate with others, tasks, time table, Kanban, and so on.
The latest app I have downloaded was Lego Super Mario because it is also a hybrid toy which is really funny.

How long have you been working on this app?

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

When we create a game, it should be unique, easy to learn, and hard to master, and the most important thing: it should make fun, fun, fun!

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

I think the combination between board game and app is really unique and allows a totally new gaming experience. So in my opinion, the user who likes strategy games about world domination should definitely take a closer look at LEADERS.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

After playing the game, the users can vote for new features that we will develop in the near future. At the moment, we work on new playable nations and game scenarios for LEADERS and of course the fantasy version called leaders of atherian.
