Grand Mountain Adventure - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

We have been working with medical software, GIS systems, geology, and audio software for several years.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Hard to say, but I suppose finding the balance between a skiing simulator, and a game which is relaxing and fun to play.

Grand Mountain Adventure is the first game created by Toppluva, which consists of three snowboarding brothers from Sweden. Development started by chance in 2015 after two of the brothers got injured in the slopes (one with a broken back, one with a broken leg) and while being away from skiing, started prototyping a ski game instead. Unlike most games released today, Grand Mountain Adventure is built upon a custom game engine and map editor tailored for the specific needs of the game.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Shazam is a fantastic app, which we use a lot.

How long have you been working on this app?

Approximately four years, but two of them we only built the game in our free time.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

In essence, we wanted to make a skiing game where you are given the opportunity to ski around big ski resorts. Where you can take lifts anywhere, and ski outside of the post if you like to.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

We think that this game, indifferent to most other games on the Android store, is a high-quality experience. It's a very thought-through control scheme, great visuals, and eerie music. We are proud to have made the first open-world skiing game for mobile devices. It took a lot of effort, and we even had to build our own game engine in order to make it run on mobile devices.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

In the near term, we will add snowboard, new mountains, and replays. Long term we will add multiplayer. Also, we plan to add real-world ski resorts.
