SwitchedOn – Reaction Training - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

No, I do not personally do the coding.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Figuring out how to provide each user with the optimal user experience that enables them to achieve the most value possible is (and probably will continue to be) one of the most challenging aspects of developing the SwitchedOn app.

The interviewee, Brett Johnson, is the Co-Founder and CEO of SwitchedOn Training Inc. SwitchedOn is a Perceptual Cognitive Motor (PCM) training app helping optimize human performance by engaging both the brain and body using just your mobile device. The SwitchedOn app provides randomized visual and audio cues that users react to with physical actions, creating a fun and engaging training experience that improves speed, agility, decision-making skills, reaction time, coordination, and more. SwitchedOn is used in over 200 countries and is trusted by professional athletes and coaches in over 10 major sports leagues like the NBA, NFL, NHL, MLS, MLB, and several pro soccer teams.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Notes app (iOS): A very simple app that makes it easy to jot down ideas, take meeting notes, etc. And quickly find them later.

Peloton: I love their workout selection, and it makes it so I don’t have to think about what to do when it's time to exercise.

Spotify: Beautiful design, great selection of music, and a lot of really cool features.

How long have you been working on this app?

About 4 years now.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

As a former pro athlete, I understood that athletes need effective ways to train by themselves. The problem with individual training is that every action you make is predetermined, but over 2 billion athletes play sports where every action they make in games is based on reacting to something they see or hear. I created the SwitchedOn app to give athletes an accessible way to train in a reactive game-like environment using just their mobile device.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

Current “brain training” apps aim to help improve athletes' cognitive abilities by having them sit down and react to information by tapping the phone screen (i.e. seeing a color and touching the screen). Our approach involves having athletes react to information with full body, sport-relevant movements (i.e., seeing a color and running in a specific direction), which recent research suggests is a more effective way to train the brain in a way that transfers to sports.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

In the next month, we will be releasing a new feature that enables coaches to add all of their athletes to a Team Dashboard where they can assign training sessions, see who completed them, and track various other training stats.

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

If this is something you might find valuable, go download and try it for free on iOS or Android (see links below) or feel free to share it with someone whom you think it could help!
