Gimme Radio - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Our team has had a lot of experience in developing streaming products and has shipped some of the first streaming music apps on the market.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

We were looking for a way to get the reliability of a native app but still making it as affordable as possible to develop. That's why we settled on developing on Native React to easily launch both Android and iOS quickly, but still created a high quality app.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Obviously the streaming music apps all have great utility and we definitely took inspiration at how easy it is to find music to play. What is unique about 'Gimme Radio' is the community aspect, so we closely looked at the messaging apps like 'Line', 'WhatsApp', 'Facebook Messenger' and 'Snap' to determine how they tackle communication.

How long have you been working on this app?

We launched the iOS version in November of 2017, and the Android version in January of 2018. We were working on the service for about 10 months before launching the mobile apps.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

We focus on serving the consumer of music who has been forgotten by most streaming services, and our first app 'Gimme Radio', is hand-crafted for the fan of metal. Overall, we are trying to make it easier to be a fan. We do so by providing three unique aspects to the service: - A great radio experience: we choose DJs that can dig deep into the genre, pick music that maybe a fan has never heard before and tell the listeners why it’s important. What we hear from our listeners is that they’re discovering music more than they ever have in any other service. - We allow listeners and DJs to communicate while the music is playing. There are people from around the world that chat during the shows and that way become friends. - We try to provide the right offers to the users while they’re in the service. We sell vinyl, CDs and other band related merchandise, as well as 'Gimme' branded merch.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

We’re the only app that allows listeners to go deep into their favorite genre. You can hear shows from some of the biggest artists in the metal genre, like Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God. And 'Gimme' has become the place that listeners consider as their home.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We are planning our second genre launch for this spring. We are focusing Gimme Country on the fan of outlaw, Americana, alt-country and legends of country music to create a radio experience you can’t hear anywhere else.
