Vidulum – Multi-Asset Cryptocurrency Wallet - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Vidulum’s development team and community is a healthy mix of self-taught programmers and institutionally trained individuals. Our collective experiences in coding and development are complementary to each other. Each team member has their strengths, from front-end, design languages, and UX to back-end object-oriented programming to database management, and software architecture. These complementary skills and experiences have helped shape the strong user experience and interface of the Vidulum App.

The quality of the application, however, goes beyond those with programming experience. There are several individuals who have brought other skills and insights to the development team including quality assurance, bug testing, and feature development.

There is a strong team behind Vidulum App that continues to be instrumental in the development process.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Going from the first iteration of Vidulum to the App we have today was very challenging. At the time our team was smaller, and we initially decided to rebuild the entire application. We made this decision because of the opportunity to make a more scalable application and to refine the user's experience.

One of the most important steps we took that helped us manage this challenge was dedicated planning. The team held weeks of discussions around features, architecture, and functionality to address some of the gaps crypto wallet users face. This exercise really helped us dial in the mockups and wireframes we used to guide development. What we have now is a strong foundation and application framework that ensures we can scale development quickly and efficiently.

Vidulum App is a one stop, self-custody multi-currency crypto web wallet. Users can hold, earn, and own their crypto assets in non-custodial fashion from any device, anywhere in the world. Vidulum is accessible through modern web browsers and available for download on Android and iOS devices. Users can seamlessly interface with their cryptocurrencies and blockchains, easily manage their crypto portfolios, and take advantage of the many ways to earn crypto rewards right in Vidulum App.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Off the top, Discord is definitely one of our favorite applications. It is a great tool that really helps open communication up for Vidulum users and crypto adopters. The app has helped our team connect in real-time with the community and has really become a fantastic gathering place for some of the great minds in the crypto space.

A few other really noteworthy applications include Signal messaging app, 1 Password for password management, and Osmosis App where people can get access to Vidulum’s native cryptocurrency, VDL.

It’s not always all about work for us though. A few of the team members really like to start their mornings by figuring out the word of the day with Wordle.

How long have you been working on this app?

The first iteration of Vidulum App came out in July of 2018. The current version of Vidulum app was released in March of 2020. For the last two plus years we have been focused on continued expansion of the application, it’s features, and the growth of the Vidulum Crypto Community and team.

Some notable features that we have recently brought to market include: the first ever self-custody crypto discord tip bot available at top.gg; network consensus built into Vidulum App making it easy and accessible for users to participate in blockchain governance.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

When the Vidulum App was conceived, one of the biggest challenges blockchain adopters faced was how fragmented the technology space was and the knowledge gap this created. The entire purpose of Vidulum is to deliver an easy-to-use, highly accessible self custody interface for crypto adopters of all skill levels. Self custody of crypto means that there is no central authority or intermediary holding your coins, this is also known as non-custodial.

With Vidulum App, users are in full control of their private keys, but this isn’t the only problem we solve. The barrier to entry for the crypto space is both high and for some, obscure. Vidulum seeks to make that easier with an intuitively designed interface and welcoming community of users that has helped many people get their footing in the cryptocurrency and blockchain space.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

Not all crypto wallets and services are created equal, and not all of them are accessible from any device. This is a challenge for a lot of users, particularly with the self-custody of crypto. Users have previously been limited to running full nodes, command-line interfaces, or only being able to access and store their crypto on certain devices despite the fact that blockchains are inherently always online.

As a light wallet, Vidulum is device agnostic. That means users can access their crypto wallet from any modern web browser on any device or through the downloadable app available for Android and iOS devices. We wanted to develop an application that allows people to quickly and easily interface with the blockchain so that they could quite literally take their crypto (private keys) with them, wherever they go. Because of this solid foundation, we’ve been able to develop numerous self-custody services that users can access freely whenever it suits them best.

One of our top features is the self custody discord tip bot, where users can link their wallet with a discord account to engage with communities and send or receive tips and rains right into their wallets. Another great feature that users can now access from anywhere is the ability to participate in Vidulum blockchain network consensus. Governance plays an essential role in blockchain and cryptocurrency. With VDL in Vidulum App, people can stake and earn crypto for supporting the network, vote on proposals, and monitor the health of the network as it continues to grow.

Another notable feature that we’ve developed to encourage self custody of crypto is a built-in reward system known as V-Staking. Users can earn VDL crypto for holding certain other assets in the application - this brings utility to the Vidulum ecosystem and to the projects that are supported in V-Staking. This is all available without the need for an intermediary and can be engaged with from anywhere.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

Top of mind for Vidulum App is to expand crypto listings and ecosystem adoption right into the App.

Vidulum’s blockchain VDL is built on the CosmosSDK and we were able to bring network consensus and governance into the web wallet for our own chain. We are currently focused on redesigning the way this feature has been implemented so that we can add support for the broader Cosmos ecosystem like ATOM, OSMOSIS, JUNO, and many more.

We have also built-in support for the Ethereum token asset layer, ERC20 contracts. We are ready to expand this feature across like cryptocurrencies after we add support for those mainnet blockchains.
