Sky Tonight – Star Gazer Guide - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Yes, Vito Technology Inc. has extensive experience in development and coding. Since our establishment, we have been dedicated to creating innovative educational apps for various platforms. Our team consists of skilled developers and designers who have worked on numerous projects, ensuring high-quality applications for our users.

One of our most notable achievements is the suite of astronomical applications. For instance, "Star Walk" is a popular app we developed that allows users to easily identify stars, constellations, and satellites in the night sky simply by pointing their device.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Well, the actual development process was relatively smooth for us, given our 20 years of experience in app development. Our primary objective was to create an interface that was super user-friendly and intuitive.

However, the real challenge was setting Sky Tonight apart from our existing app, Star Walk 2. Initially, it felt a bit odd to create another app with the same purpose since Star Walk 2 was also all about finding and identifying celestial objects.

But we had thousands of user reviews, so we started to identify features that were missing in Star Walk 2, which we didn't want to add to avoid overloading the app. So, we decided to build a new app with a fresh concept. Star Walk 2 still remains a beautiful app that offers a serene stargazing experience, allowing users to immerse themselves in the celestial world. In contrast, Sky Tonight was designed to be a highly practical app, enabling users to explore the sky with the proficiency of professional astronomers.

Once we received positive feedback from users with varying levels of expertise, from beginners to experienced astronomers, we knew we had done a great job!

Vito Technology Inc. is a renowned mobile app development company known for its high-quality digital products, especially in the realm of stargazing and astronomy. With apps like Star Walk, Solar Walk, and more under its belt, the company boasts over 20 million users ranging from amateur astronomers to professionals, students to professors, and kids to adults.

Founded in 2001, Vito Technology initially focused on navigation products for Windows Mobile. However, with the advent of the iPhone in 2007, the company pivoted to the iOS market, leading to the creation of its flagship app, Star Walk, in 2008. This app, along with its successor Star Walk 2, has garnered numerous accolades, including the Apple Design Award in 2010.

Over the years, Vito Technology has expanded its portfolio, introducing apps tailored to different audiences. Their commitment to innovation and user experience has made them a leader in the field of astronomical apps.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

We genuinely adore Star Walk 2 because it has this amazing ability to make people fall in love with astronomy. Its thoughtful design still feels fresh even after a whopping 9 years since its debut. Also, the idea of the Satellite Tracker is pretty neat and straightforward. Initially, tracking satellites in the sky might come across as a bit geeky, but you'd be surprised by how it actually helps folks expand their knowledge of the cosmos.

While we have our own suite of astronomical apps, we always appreciate and admire the work of fellow developers in the field. Sky Guide is indeed an impressive app that we greatly respect. It strikes a perfect balance by offering a minimalist yet comprehensive tool for exploring the night sky.

It's always great to see multiple high-quality apps in the same domain as they push each other to innovate and provide the best experience for users.

How long have you been working on this app?

We've been working on this app for about eight months. That's from the initial idea to its release on the App Store and Google Play in 2021. But we didn't stop there; we've continued refining Sky Tonight, adding new features, and enhancing its user-friendliness ever since.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

When developing this app, our main goal was to help users answer the following 3 questions:

- What is that bright dot in the sky?
- What astronomical events can I see tonight?
- How can I find the object I'm interested in?

Additionally, we aimed for a modern, user-friendly design aligned with current UI/UX standards.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

In essence, while there are many stargazing apps out there, I believe the user-centric features and design choices of "Sky Tonight" set it apart. We've learned from our past experiences with apps like Star Walk 2 and used that knowledge to create something truly special with "Sky Tonight.” Every feature and every design choice reflects our commitment to providing the best stargazing experience for our users, and that's something we're incredibly proud of.

One of the standout features is our focus on one-handed usage. With the trend of larger phone screens, we recognized the challenge users face in navigating apps. By designing "Sky Tonight" for one-handed use, we've ensured that our users can comfortably and effortlessly explore the night sky, even with just one hand.

We're particularly proud of the bottom navigation in the Sky Tonight app. Drawing from research that showed 75% of users primarily use their thumb to navigate their phone screens, we positioned our navigation at the bottom. This not only enhances usability but also ensures that users can switch between different views with just a single tap, without any awkward stretching.

Our main screen is also something we're proud of. With quick access buttons like Search, Astronomy Calendar, and Visible Tonight, we've streamlined the user experience, making it easier for stargazers to find answers to their most pressing questions. The quick settings panel and the minimized information window further enhance this, ensuring users have all the information they need right at their fingertips.

Additionally, our revamped Calendar feature in "Sky Tonight" truly sets us apart. The Calendar section has been a part of our app since its inception, allowing users to anticipate upcoming stargazing events and plan their observations. But we weren't content with just having a feature; we wanted it to be the best. Initially, our Calendar resembled the Visible Tonight section too closely, which caused some confusion among our users. Taking this feedback to heart, we embarked on a journey to revamp the Calendar. We transformed its appearance to a more traditional, linear grid view, which most users are familiar with. This change allowed users to see an entire month at a glance and swiftly switch between dates. But the real magic lies in the details. We introduced four distinct tabs: Events, Moon, Meteors, and Sky. Each tab is brimming with valuable stargazing information. From tracking significant celestial events and Moon phases to identifying meteor showers and understanding the Sun and Moon's patterns, our Calendar offers a comprehensive yet streamlined experience.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We've got some exciting stuff in the pipeline! While we're keeping the details under wraps to maintain the element of surprise, you can expect our upcoming release to be pretty extensive and filled with new, unique features that'll take your stargazing experience to the next level.

Speaking of our long-term vision, we're considering integrating AI-powered automatic compass calibration. This idea aims to make the app even more user-friendly and accurate, ensuring you have the best stargazing companion possible.

Sky Tonight – Star Gazer Guide

About App:

Sky Tonight is a new app for sky enthusiasts. It helps you answer the three most common questions:

What is that bright spot in the sky?
What celestial events are happening tonight?
How can I find the object I want to see?

Created by the makers of Star Walk apps, Sky Tonight is a customizable skywatching tool, that is designed for users with different preferences and goals. You can change the appearance of the constellations, set an alert for any sky configuration, explore the unique trajectories of the objects relative to you, set a limit for the brightness of the objects, and much more.

Sky Tonight features:

* Point your device at the sky to see the real-time positions of celestial objects on the interactive sky map.

* Use the Time Machine and see how the sky changes at different dates and times.

* Use the augmented reality mode and see the sky map superimposed on the image from your device’s camera.

* Get more information about any sky object by tapping on its name.

* Stay informed on the latest news from the world of astronomy with the What’s new section.

* Turn on the night mode to make your sky observation in the nighttime more comfortable.

* Filter the objects that appear on the sky map according to their visual brightness.

* Adjust the brightness of objects on the sky map.

* See dozens of asterisms along with the official constellations.

* Customize the visible constellations and their representation on the screen.

Unique features:

Interactive trajectories relative to an observer Instead of the usual trajectory that shows the object’s path in the celestial sphere relative to the Earth’s center, the app shows the object’s path in the sky relative to an observer. A long touch on the trajectories relative to the observer will move the sky object to the selected point. While holding the touch, move your finger along the trajectory to change the time.

Flexible search Make use of the flexible search — quickly find space objects, easily navigate across different objects and events’ types. Look for “stars”, “mars moons”, “mars conjunctions”, “solar eclipse”, and the app will show you all related objects, events, and articles! There are also Trending and Recent categories in the search section. The first one presents the currently most popular objects, events, or news; the second category contains objects you recently selected.

Fully customizable event reminders Set event reminders on any time and date not to miss a solar eclipse, a Full Moon, or a star-planet configuration you’re interested in.

Astronomy calendar with a stargazing index and weather forecast Check out the calendar of celestial events that includes lunar phases, meteor showers, eclipses, oppositions, conjunctions, and other exciting events. Learn what astronomy events will occur this month or see what happened in the sky a year ago! Verify the Stargazing Index calculated from a Moon phase, light pollution, cloudiness, and time when an object is visible. The higher this index is, the better the observation conditions are.

You don’t need several apps for your stargazing planning anymore; Sky Tonight contains all the info you need.

Premium Access:
The app includes paid Premium Access. Get Premium Access to use Sky Tonight with no limits! Without the subscription, you can’t see most of the interface items in various sections such as Visible Tonight, Calendar, and Search. Therefore, you’re limited in planning and improving your observations. Premium Access will allow you to unlock all the interface items in any view and make the most of all the app’s features. Advertisements will also be removed not to interrupt your stargazing experience.
