Learn Languages with LENGO - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Not at all. I was more interested in the medical field, aiming to become a surgeon. Later, I became interested in understanding how our brain learns, which ultimately made me interested in technology.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

It was developing an algorithm that asks the learner to repeat words right at the brink of forgetting them. That makes the spaced-repetition algorithm the most effective. The goal is to remember as much as possible with as little effort.

The interviewee, Nils Bernschneider, is the Founder and CEO of LENGO. LENGO was launched in 2020, aims to make education accessible to everyone. It offers more than 2,800 lessons and 29 languages for users to learn. Bernschneider faced difficulties in school and was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. He used his coding skills to create a platform that would help him and others overcome the obstacles to learning. LENGO provides users with the content and technology they need to enhance their communication skills.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

I like the app OneSec. It forces you to take a deep breath before opening social media or other addicting apps. Additionally, Structured is a good app for planning ahead of time because of its unique scheduling tasks.

How long have you been working on this app?

I've been working on it since school but created a company in 2020 because I needed the help of professionals to develop the grammar and vocabulary content.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

Using books and index cards to learn and repeat is inefficient since they cannot adjust to one's brain. I want to help those looking for a more efficient way to get the knowledge they would get from grammar books or writing down their vocabulary on index cards. LENGO provides grammar explanations and exercises that take feedback from your input and dynamically adjust to your learning speed and the ability to add your vocabulary lists.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

I started working on this app because other apps on the market tried to replace teachers. There is still non-replaceable value in a human teacher. Therefore, LENGO is not a digital teacher but a digital language learning book. It is the only app I designed to support you in your language learning journey e. g. in addition to a course, school, or during your travels.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We are exploring the value we could add in a mixed-reality environment but have yet to make specific announcements. However, we will continue adding new language-learning content and improving what we already have.
