SingleMuslim - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

I have been coding since I was 7 years old. I started coding on the likes of ZX Spectrum, and Commodore 64. I have been working on SingleMuslim.com since its conception in 2000.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

I think the most challenging part was rebuilding the core of SingleMuslim.com from just a website to an API, on which we could develop all sorts of different interfaces for our users and be able to scale horizontally. This then allowed us to build the native mobile apps for iOS and Android, we were also able to develop new websites and widgets as well as the mobile apps.

The interviewee, Mr. Steven Lewis, is the CTO and Co-Founder of SingleMuslim.com, the largest Muslim-owned dating app in the world.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

I like the The Room and The House of Da Vinci series, the apps are really good puzzle games and are not a simple as they look.
On the more techie side I use “Termius”, “VNC Viewer” and a few more, which allow me to always keep an eye on SingleMuslim.com.
I do really have way too many apps on my phone, but overall I do like apps that are well designed, intuitive to use, and do the job they are designed to do.

How long have you been working on this app?

Overall I have been working on SingleMuslim.com since 2000, but version 1.0.0 of the app was released in 2016. From all my time working on software, I have found that you never stop working on software because there is something new to do, the phrase I use quite often is “Software is never finished, only abandoned.”

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

When we were developing SingleMuslim.com, we wanted to create a safe and secure environment for single Muslims to find marriage partners. We wanted to connect our users from different locations not just here in the UK, but also across the world. This concept back in 2000 was unheard of, but has become the success that it is today.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

What makes me proud is ensuring the safety and security of our users. I have gone to great lengths to protect our users.

I have developed systems where our users can have fine control over who can view their pictures using a private gallery feature and also a picture swap feature which allows users to access each other’s pictures for a limited time period.

I also designed a feature where users can report individual profiles to our team. Users can report anything from misuse of the service, suspicious looking profiles or even a bug on the App. We have a designated human admin team who will then investigate the report and take the appropriate action necessary. SingleMuslim is one of the few (if not only) online matrimonial/dating apps which has a designated support helpline. Our users can contact our team through phone, WhatsApp and email.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We have a whole host of things that we are currently working on, including voice and video calling, making the apps (iOS and Android) smoother to use, and complete visual redesign of the apps to bring a more modern, smoother experience for our users.
