The Session team has years of combined software development experience. The developers working on Session have experience contributing to multiple other privacy-oriented projects, including Monero and I2P. On top of that, we’ve been actively developing Session, Lokinet, and Oxen for over 2 years, and we’ve gained valuable knowledge during that time.
Building a messenger that offers hardcore privacy means there is a high level of complexity behind the scenes. Sticking true to the highest privacy and security standards whilst maintaining the smooth user experience people have come to expect from messaging applications has been difficult, but the hard work has paid off.
The purpose of the OPTF is to build open-source, metadata-free communications tools and apps that defend privacy in the digital world.
The interviewee chose not to answer this question.
We started designing Session back in 2018, and its earliest public versions were released in 2019. Since then, Session has grown enormously, with 500,000+ downloads, 150,000+ monthly active users, and high growth rates.
Session is built for those who need privacy and anonymity when sending messages. Journalists, advocates, friends, family, businesses. Send messages, not metadata.
Session is the most private messaging app in the app store. Unlike other popular messengers, it doesn’t require any phone number to sign up. On top of that, messages are end-to-end encrypted and onion-routed for unrivalled security and privacy.
Session is still young but we’re growing fast. We’re working on bringing exciting new features like onion routed voice and video calls — making Session the most private way to have a phone call.
Download Session and give it a go! We hope you’ll find the app easy and enjoyable to use. Knowing your messages are truly private is a feeling like no other. Share Session with your friends and family and give us a rating on your relevant app store.
About App:
Session is a new breed of encrypted private messenger, built on a unique network of user-operated servers spread all over the world. With no central servers, Session can’t leak or sell your data. You don't need a phone number or email to sign up — your Session ID can stay completely anonymous. And Session’s private routing protocols keep your messages secret and secure. No one ever knows who you’re talking to, what you’re saying, or even your IP address.
• Fully anonymous account creation, no phone number or email required
• Decentralised server network: No data breaches and no central point of failure
• No metadata logging: Session doesn't store, track, or log your messaging metadata
• IP address protection: Device IP addresses are never exposed to the person you're talking to or the servers holding your data
• Closed groups: Private, end-to-end encrypted group chats for up to 100 people
• Encrypted attachments: Share voice snippets, photos, and files with Session's security and privacy protections
• Free and fully open-source: Don’t take our word for it — check Session's code yourself
Session is free as in free speech, free as in free beer, and free of ads and trackers. Session is built and maintained by the OPTF, Australia’s first privacy tech not-for-profit organization. Take back your online privacy today — download Session.
