Mekorama - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Yes, I've been making games for 25 years, releasing my first tiny indie games in 1998.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

I knew from the start that I wanted to include a built-in level editor. But I struggled a long time with figuring out a way for users who build their own levels to share them with other players. The solution was the QR code level cards, which allow Mekorama levels to be shared like you'd share a regular photo, on social media or wherever!

Computer games are Martin's love of life. He grew up playing them and after pursuing a degree and a career related to AI, he left both of these paths to become a full-time Indie game developer, and that too a great one!

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Mekorama is inspired by Monument Valley, which is one of my favorite mobile games, and drop-dead gorgeous to look at. On PC I think FEZ is just a tremendous achievement, such a pleasant world to explore!

How long have you been working on this app?

The initial development took about 2 years, and now the app and its community has been going strong for 4 more years.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

I try to deliver a fun and relaxing experience, where you can also get creative with the level building blocks.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

I'm terrible at animation. So I knew I could never animate Mekorama's protagonist, named B, in the traditional way. Instead, I made the little robot a real physical object, struggling to keep its balance and to put one foot in front of the other. And in the end, I think it makes it feel a lot more alive!

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

None of the future plans are public. So that if they fail spectacularly, as future plans often do, only I will be disappointed. But if they come to fruition, others will be happily surprised!

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

If you like the game, please consider paying for it! (If you can't, that's fine too, I understand.)
