Faye Travel Insurance - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

I have two decades of programming experience with a specialization in real-time applications. This has culminated in me leading technology here at Faye Travel Insurance where we’ve created the first 100% digital, consumer-centric travel insurance for Americans enabling smarter, faster assistance and claims resolutions. Our whole-trip protection, coupled with our proprietary technology, provides 24/7 immediate support anywhere in the world, quick reimbursements and an app where you can do it all - from covering your trips to filing claims.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

First and foremost, it’s incredibly interesting to turn a legacy-dominated field known for lacking innovation, on its head, starting from scratch and building a fully digital experience. A challenging aspect of that relates to our fintech solution, Faye Wallet, which is our secure digital debit card in which we can reimburse travelers on approved claims and for common travel inconveniences, such as flight delays or lost luggage. Adding Faye Wallet to Google Pay and APple Pay takes seconds, and our users can use these funds to pay for things when they need it most - rather than paying out of pocket. That said, enabling users to pay for things with their mobile phone, all over the world, comes with difficulties.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

I’ll give you my ultimate, #1 travel app: Flighty - great user experience and they’re always the first to know about a flight delay.

How long have you been working on this app?

We didn’t start as Faye. In September 2019, my business partner, Faye Co-founder & CEO Elad Schaffer, and I launched an AI travel assistant. We had paying clients already, as well as confirmed pre-seed funding. When COVID-19 hit, all of that changed, and Faye was reborn as a mobile-first, travel insurance company that seeks to be both your insurer, and your #1 companion.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

There are many pain points in this ecosystem - it’s a space that has undergone little innovation.

Travel insurance tends to be chock-full of lengthy jargon-filled policies that leave travelers confused rather than well-informed. The claims process is slow and bureaucratic, requiring excessive paperwork and lengthy wait times. And there’s really no brand working to build strong connections with consumers, making travel insurance feel like a distant service that’s hard to reach.

We created Faye as a solution to these longstanding issues.

From getting trips covered, to receiving real-time itinerary alerts, to filing claims, to receiving reimbursements, to chatting with support 24/7, Faye has created an app that’s actually useful in a sea dominated by incumbent players who have failed to digitize.

Our product is clear and holistic - you know what coverage you’re purchasing and how you’re protected pre-trip and in-trip. In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

This is an ecosystem dominated by incumbent players and in recent years, newer more modern insurtechs (Faye included). There’s room for everyone, but Faye brings a fresh take, one of a transparent, person-first and technology-driven company that travelers happily want to come back to for life. We marry travel with insurance and financial solutions to care for travelers holistically, going beyond the simple function of insurance. In short, n o travel insurance provider has successfully built an app that’s actually useful to the end user. Until now, until Faye.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

In the coming months we plan to dedicate our recent capital injection to bring more speed and automation into claims processing, enable easy access to doctors anywhere in the world in minutes via our telemedicine offering, enhance the way we help customers overcome flight delays and cancellations and create new tools for our partners - travel agencies and other providers - to educate their customers on the importance of travel insurance and empower them to offer it in the most seamless way.

Once there they can also contact our support team 24/7 via the chat function - and not just for emergencies, but also for tour recommendations, where to eat and even where the closest pharmacy and ATM are located.
