Childstones - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

No, I did not have any prior experience.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

The most challenging aspect of developing a mobile app was keeping the developers on target with my vision. Although I did create a storyboard in advance, it was still difficult to keep the execution in line as it was sometimes difficult to communicate abstract ideas with the development team.

After many years of practicing dentistry in Brooklyn, Dr. Eli Adler, who grew up in the Five Towns area, has opened an office in Lynbrook. In addition to offering a wide variety of top-notch dental services to adults and children, his plan includes bringing his “no-nonsense Brooklyn prices” to the South Shore community. All dental services are provided by Dr. Adler himself. He does root canals using computerized equipment. Implantations are done from beginning to end, from placement to restoration. The facility, which is part of a new store-front style medical center, consists of a beautiful modern office kept clean with high standards. As Brooklyn has a large population of families, Dr. Adler brings years of experience in working with children, which he adores doing. With a strong background in children’s dentistry, he uses a non-injection technique for fillings, which works well on baby teeth. Using a gentle approach, he explains things in a way a child will understand, thus providing a fun and positive experience. For adults, he uses a patented numbing technique that eliminates those “fat lip” and “drooling” feelings. The injection numbs the tooth without extending the feeling to the tongue and lip. He also offers cosmetic work, such as veneers and other aesthetics. Having been a resident of the Five Towns area for over 30 years, Dr. Adler is quite familiar with the cultural makeup and the needs of the community. He, his wife , and their sons live in the area. He attended New York University Dental School in Manhattan and did his residency at Peninsula Hospital in Far Rockaway. During college, he did volunteer work, organizing weekend basketball leagues for Lawrence Middle School and the #1 School.
At this time, Dr. Adler honors all major insurance and union plans as full payment. For those who have no dental insurance, he keeps his fees affordable. Sunday and evening hours are available.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

My all time favorite app is Waze. I used to get lost and even found the old nuvi navigation frustrating to use. I love knowing where I'm going and knowing exactly what time I will arrive!

How long have you been working on this app?

I have been working on this app for two years. Although a lot of the time was spent on looking for funding.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

Parents love their children. They find it very frustrating when their child struggles to develop properly. I want to give parents a tool to help ensure, that their children's milestone development, will be preserved on video in a useful manner. One in five children have a some sort of developmental delay. The only way parents can ensure their children are in optimum position to receive help, is by supplying physicians and therapists, all the necessary historical data so an early and accurate diagnosis can be made. If a picture is worth a thousand words than a video is worth a million words. Doctors and therapists can use this app as a time machine and go back to watch important short videos of a child performing diagnostic milestone activities at different age intervals. Although eighty percent of children won't develop any issues, this app provides a fantastic way to keep sentimental memories as well!

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has sponsored a health initiative to make parents aware that they need to keep tabs on whether their children are reaching milestones on time. Their campaign is called Learn the Signs. Act Early. They even released an app recently which creates a checklist for parents to check off whether or not a milestone has been reached. Our Childstones app goes way beyond that. We are actually enabling parents to create a collection of short videos based on the American Academy of Pediatrics checklist. Our goal is to help all parents get early and accurate diagnosis for any developmental delay. This will cut down on therapy time and excessive evaluations. We hope to make a real improvement the field of Developmental Delay Diagnostics.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

At the moment, parents can share videos with doctors and therapists through emailing drop box. We may later create a version where physicians log into our app using a doctor log in portal.

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

Everyone has family members or friends that can benefit from this app. It's meant to record children five and under. Spread this around. We need to create a movement of parents who want to take a stand and help make sure that other families do not have to go through the same difficulties in raising children with these challenges. We can all make a difference!

Childstones

About App: The app allows parents to capture all their child's important milestones during early development (from birth to age 5) via video and content. This information is then available on the app, and with the touch of a button, can be shared through email or shown to their healthcare professional. Dr. Eli Adler created the app to solve a common challenge in the healthcare field. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent evaluating and treating children with developmental delays. All too often, children are either initially misdiagnosed or do not receive a diagnosis until years later. This is because parents usually cannot provide physicians and therapists with an accurate history of their child's milestone development.
