24/7 online dermatologist - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Yes. Our CTO Lucas Habrich as well as the rest of our development team have worked on numerous projects before. From B2B SaaS Tools to a financial app, they have had the chance to work in various fields.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Data security and data protection is very strict when it comes to medical data in the EU. Mastering this while still creating an app that is easy to use for the end users from all age groups was very challenging.

The interviewee, Dr. Ole Martin is the CEO of Dermanostic.
Dermanostic is a digital dermatologist. Patients contact the doctors through our app. They send in pictures of their skinconditions/ skin problems, describe the symptoms and answer a few questions and then receive a diagnosis including a therapy recommendation within 24 hours.
The needed prescription can be sent digitally to an online pharmacy or via mail to a local pharmacy. Dermanostic has a fixed team of doctors who only work for us. Their Patients range in age between 2 weeks old infants and 103-year-old retirees.
The company was founded in 2020 by 4 medical doctors, Dr. Estefanía Lang, Dr. Alice Martin, Patrick Lang as well as Dr. Ole Martin.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Our team really loves the "Flo" App by Flo Health Inc. Its fun to use, really provides value and for a health tracking app it's almost addicting.

How long have you been working on this app?

Initial development of version 1.0 took about 9 months full-time for our CTO Lucas Habrich. Since then we have continuously improved the app as well as all services we offer. We've listened to feedback from our users and patients. And made sure the process is as smooth as possible for them. Currently we have 5 developers and one UX designer working fulltime on improving the app.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

Getting in touch with a dermatologist takes time and a lot of patience. In Germany the average waiting period for an appointment is 38 days. We wanted to solve this and enable patients to contact a dermatologist as quickly as possible through a digital consultation.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

We really listen to feedback and try to think from a patient's perspective instead of acting like a doctor. We spend a lot of time talking to our patients, especially the ones that are not digital natives and try to solve the issues they have with our app. Additionally, we are always trying to provide as much value as possible. We really care about our patients and that's reflected in the app.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We are currently redesigning the app from the ground up. We will include additional features like a sunscreen timer, reminding people to freshen up their sun protection after the appropriate time. We are also incorporating some AI features that we cannot talk about yet - but are related to skincare questions our patients have We are also redesigning the whole process the patients goes through in order to send images to our doctors. We want to make it even easier and actually quite fun. User feedback so far has been great!
