100 Doors Games 2020: Escape from School - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

No, our team didn't have almost any experience, not just in coding, but also in making this type of game. Luckily, we had help from our more experienced colleagues, but most of the work included a lot of research and testing.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

The most challenging aspect was probably making levels that wouldn't be too hard, but not too easy either, levels that will make our players want more. Our goal was to make interesting and challenging levels with beautiful and attractive graphics. After 2 years of constantly improving our gameplay, we think our players are quite satisfied.

Ana Marija, the interviewee, is the project manager at Peaksel. Peaksel is a mobile development and publishing company, located in Nis, Serbia. The company specializes in creating, publishing and marketing of mobile games and apps for Android and iOS devices. The company was founded in 2012 and today has over 40 full-time employees and a portfolio of over 700 mobile apps and games. Peaksel is a privately held, bootstrapped company, meaning it operates on its own profits without external investors up to date.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

June's Journey - because I love a good mystery, not to mention the stunning art style.

Cube Escape - those riddles are the food that my brain needs. :)

Fishdom - because of its gameplay and level design.

How long have you been working on this app?

We started working on this game 2 years ago. We published it after a year, but we are constantly trying to make it better.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

We wanted our players to spend some quality time training their brains (not just killing time) while enjoying beautiful graphics.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

We tried to add some new features that other similar games didn't have. For example, our hint system, which allows players to get a complete step by step explanation of every riddle in our game. Also, we added free daily reward and leaderboard so players can compete with one another. I think our big advantage is very attractive graphics and animations.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We plan to continue optimizing the game based on user feedback as we’ve been doing so far. At the moment, the game has 140 levels and we believe that’s enough for the time being. In the meantime, we’ve been working on a very similar, perhaps even better game that should be out this year as well.
