SUNNYTRACK: Sun Position App - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Yes. I coded my first website at an age of eight years already, and it was great fun. Following, my school education had its focus on Informatics, and I now have a degree in computer science from Graz University of Technology. Besides, lots of innovative software projects were completed successfully.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

The most challenging part was – for sure – the AR 3D functionality that provides the cool Augmented Reality View showing the sun path for every day of the year at your current location directly in your camera view as an overlay. This was not easy to implement, but it was interesting solving that challenge.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

I really like SUNNYTRACK [https://www.sunnytrack.app] because it is just great and useful for planning sun and shadows for photography, optimal real estate search, photovoltaics installation, garden planning or outdoor activities; and because it is “my baby”, developed by myself ;-)

Furthermore, I really enjoy Sixpack in 30 Days, because it provides great exercises when you spend lots of time in front of your computer :-)

How long have you been working on this app?

I started around 2011. The app was published in 2018. So, that were about seven years of development. Of course, there is always work, still. SUNNYTRACK development will be continued.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

It was my hobby since when I was a child to take photos of trains. Of course, at some point, it got more important having perfect sunlight conditions for these photos. There was an online tool to plan the sun direction on a map, but there was no cool app. So, I decided to create an app for planning the sun position, movement, and shadow situation for all times and days of the year.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

I’m really proud of my baby, SUNNYTRACK. I think, and a lot of users reported that the design and UI is so simple to understand yet attractive and provide great functionality. Users really like to use SUNNYTRACK, and they usually understand everything at first sight. This is such great feedback for me, as a developer!

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

Updates are on the way. Sunny times are coming. (Not telling any secrets)

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

Get the app, try it out, calculate sunlight and shadows, and spread the word ?
