Spells of Genesis - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Before Spells of Genesis, we had a trading card game called Moonga. I started coding the first version of Moonga when I was in high school as a web game. Then I developed the first mobile version of the game in 2010. Grew the team, and many talented people contributed to Moonga and then Spells of Genesis.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Spells of Genesis allow players to really own the game cards. They are free to give, trade, and sell their cards without us being involved. We wanted to offer a similar ownership experience to physical trading card games in the digital world. To do that, we are using blockchains to store part of the game cards. Offering an experience using nascent technologies while preserving a smooth gameplay experience was probably the most challenging part of the project.

The interviewee, Mr. Shabaan Shamee, is the Founder of EverdreamSoft, the producer of Spells of Genesis. Since 2014, EverdreamSoft has been pioneering the integration and use of blockchain tools in the domain of gaming and digital collectibles.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

It isn’t easy to name favorite apps because it depends on the different use cases. Personally, when it comes to apps, I like when they have a beautiful design and great UIX. I might be retro, but I liked the Skeuomorphism design trend. Skeuomorphism is when an app design is close to a physical object for a particular usage. For example, the calculator app that looks like a real calculator. This was a real trend in the early ages of smartphones, but now it has been entirely replaced by the flat design trend.

How long have you been working on this app?

We have been working on the app since 2015. The game was released in beta version in 2016 and global launch in 2017.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

I wanted to create a very simple game that my mother could enjoy while keeping a deep strategic aspect for those who wish to challenge their mind. That is where the mix between arcade and trading card games emerged.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

Spells of Genesis is successfully blending the bubble shooter fun and the trading card game strategy. Card Illustrations are beautiful. Spells of Genesis is a great innovation as it is the first ever game using and distributing game assets as NFTs (cryptocurrency tokens). Players are rewarded with valuable cards, freely tradable. This way, we are sharing the game's success with the players as well.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

I don’t want to spoil too much, but what I can say it’s that we are working on the extension of a new Spells of Genesis map with a lot of unique content and cards. It will also be possible to switch from one map to another (multi-mapping). In addition to the new map, we are working on decorative elements and on a level creator.
