Rootd – Anxiety & Panic Relief - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

No, I do not.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Working through technical difficulties during the development process as a non-technical founder.

Rootd’s founder Ania Wysocka was in the final year of her International Relations degree, with a dream of working for the UN, when she started having panic attacks seemingly out-of-nowhere.

Her first instinct was to reach for her phone to find a resource that could help her understand or process what was happening, but there were no such apps available at the time, and other resources were less accessible, or too expensive.

She was far from home, living on student loans, and didn’t have a family doctor. Ania felt lost, uncertain, and alone.

In an effort to better understand what she was experiencing, Ania started doing her own voracious research and sought help through counseling and other in-depth conversations with mental health professionals.

During University Ania’s side hobby of graphic design and web development had gradually grown into something more, and she later started her first post-grad job with a digital agency.

But the desire to create a digital tool that could help herself and others lingered, and a couple of years after her first panic attack, she started sketching the first wireframes for Rootd.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Duolingo: As someone who struggled with anxiety I love its ease of use and how the screens are not so cluttered. I can clearly see how to get from point A to point B without distractions on the page.

I also love the translate app. It’s simple and one I use frequently as I travel, learn languages, and interact with Rootd users from all over the world!

How long have you been working on this app?

5 years.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

An accessible, safe, and easy-to-use resource to help stop a panic attack and manage anxiety.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

There are few apps focused on panic attacks specifically and even fewer that do so from a perspective of lived experience. Rootd helps users familiarize themselves with these frightening symptoms in an approachable way and delivers clear step-by-step instructions on how to navigate and understand anxiety.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We are always working to improve the user experience, keep up with app trends and make sure the app stays effective, relevant, and abides by the core values. We’ll continue to add more content to the Visualization and Sleep tools, and plan to incorporate a Daily Challenge for users to stay consistent on their healing journey.

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

Please let us know what you think of Rootd at [email protected], leave a review and share the app with your friends that may benefit from the support that Rootd provides. Thank you! :)
