Photo Scan App by Photomyne - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Yes, I've been working as an iOS developer for 10 years. I published my first iPhone app in August 2008, when the App Store just opened.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

This app uses deep-learning algorithms. This kind of algorithms are very sophisticated and usually run on servers. For Photomyne, we really wanted a smooth user experience, not dependant on internet connection. So we had to put a lot of effort into making these algorithms efficient enough to run on the device itself.

Omer Shoor, the CTO and Co-Founder of Photomyne: Omer has 20+ years of experience as a software engineer, and has been a mobile development expert for 10 years. He is an entrepreneur with unique expertise in image processing. Prior to his work with Photomyne, Omer founded Photogene, a very successful iPhone photo editing application.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

I really like the Twitter app, because the user interface is really responsive and slick. Also, they didn't try to cram too many features into it, so the app is not cluttered and is straightforward to use.

How long have you been working on this app?

We've been working on Photomyne for over 4 years.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

Photomyne is primarily a photo scanning app. We wanted the process of digitizing photos to be accessible to everyone. So our focus was on making the scanning process as easy as possible. It doesn't matter how the user places the photo, or what the background is - our algorithms will automatically detect the photo and crop it correctly.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

Compared to other photo-scanning apps, our app allows the user to scan a lot of photos very quickly. This is made possible because our algorithm can detect multiple photos within a single shot. We also trained a unique color restoration algorithm, specifically for restoring old and faded colors. So the scanned photos look more vibrant and in higher quality. Finally, we don’t just focus on the scanning itself, but on providing a holistic experience where users can add details and enjoy our creative ways of sharing the photos and their associated stories.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We intend to allow you to add more types of media to the app, such as old videos and audio recordings.
