Othello – Official Board Game for Free - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

We have been developing/publishing mobile gaming apps for more than 15 years now. For us, it all started back in the days of Java/J2ME games on Nokia and Motorola phones. :)

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

With “Othello™” one of the most challenging aspects has been to make the game look as close to the real board game experience as possible whilst also giving the player the comfort and ease of playing on a modern interactive device.

Over ten years of experience working in the mobile games industry make Chris a pioneer and a veteran. Chris played on the Atari 2600 when he was just a kid, got a degree in Media & Business Management at the University of Manchester, and worked in California for the then revolutionary peer-to-peer platform “Napster” at the turn of the millennium. The LITE Games CEO is a digital native who loves retro games.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Personally, I’m a big fan of “PinOut” (Mediocre), mainly because I do like Pinball and it’s a new take on the genre. It’s highly polished and I like Mediocre’s general view on our industry. Other titles I love are “Tower Conquest” by Titan Mobile and the recently published “Hero Park” by Fun Flavor Games.
From our titles, I really love our version of the popular dice game “Farkle”. It’s really easy to get the rules and the games’ space style setting make it look really cool.

How long have you been working on this app?

I took us approximately 6-8 months to create “Othello™”. We do however keep working on the app to continuously improve features and technical performance.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

We wanted to give the user a good version of the great classic board game “Othello™”. A version with offline single-player as well as online multiplayer functionality. We wanted to make a version for beginners and advanced players alike.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

Our game is the officially licensed mobile version of “Othello™”, a game that many of us still remember from their childhood days. As mentioned before, our game excels in bringing the classic “Othello™” experience to your mobile device. It’s very easily accessible (important for beginners), but still can be challenging for better players. The more pro players attempt to claim a place in the Top10 of the international leaderboard. And if you’re really, really good, you might even get your name published on the monthly Top3 board on .

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

In the mid-term we’d like to further improve the online functionality: we’d like to add features like tournaments or league-play as well as constantly improving the app's responsiveness and stability.
