Krikey: Indian AR Short Videos + 3D Games App - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Yes, one of our co-founders has a Ph.D. and experience building Virtual Reality experiences.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

The big challenge for our team has been to build Augmented Reality experiences for mobile devices. There are a wide variety of Android devices in India and so we had to figure out how to make our app size small but still have decent quality graphics and use computer vision in the phone camera. It has been a really fun challenge to work on and we hope our users enjoy the app!

Krikey is an Augmented Reality social media gaming app that is live on iOS and Android. Krikey just closed their Series A round, led by India’s largest telecom operator, Reliance Jio. Krikey has partnered with Google Maps, The Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Foundation, Sony Pictures Entertainment and the National Audubon Society, building custom AR games for each brand partner. In 2020, Krikey launched their first action-adventure game, Yaatra. In 2021, Krikey launched Krikees - custom 3D Avatars!

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Right now, one of our big projects is improving the discoverability of content and helping users navigate the video feeds in our app. Lots of people are creating super cool, creative AR videos with their 3D Avatars and we want to be able to bring to the top of the video feed the best videos every day! Instagram and Netflix have really good discovery algorithms and they are definitely an inspiration for us as our small team works on short video discovery in the app.

How long have you been working on this app?

We launched our test version of the app in 2018 and did a big public launch in Dec. 2020 in partnership with Reliance Jio! This is when we launched our new AR game YAATRA, followed by our 3D Avatars feature.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

Our mission is to entertain the world with Augmented Reality. (Especially important during the lockdown as everyone is staying home!)

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

Krikey is built for India first. Our goal is to bring storytelling and Indian characters to life in Augmented Reality. No other company does this today. We are proud of the rich diversity in India and hope to reflect it in the Augmented Reality stories and characters we publish. We love how our users interact with these characters in Krikey App videos and hope India will be the first in the world to take the leap forward in mobile interactive storytelling with us.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We have an exciting NEW game launching in August (Run Ji Run) and look forward to sharing that with our Krikey App Community!
