Yes, I wrote many apps when it came to Kalea’s Kolors. This one was personal and named after my youngest daughter so I tried to build something very special and it needed all the experience I had and much more.
Kalea’s Kolors is a challenge on every level. I have never done a full 3D game or app, so I had to learn all the details and tricks. To reveal characters, animate flow of color. And most of all keep expenses acceptible. Having the actual models and illustrations created was sooooo much more work intensive than just a coloring page, it made sense but blew my mind and I almost ran out of funds when I was done.
"When I was becoming a teen about 12 years old I started programming, first Basic, then, Pascal, then a bit Assembler and later Java, but when it came to university I studied Math and did my Ph.D. over non-linear semidefinite programs. During that time in 2005 I discovered macOS Panther Apple’s user-friendly approach, I bought a mac, started coding in Objective-C, and fell in love with macOS APIs.
I worked for a big California-based software company before I created my own brand of software “TheKeptPromise” www.TheKeptPromise.com - software that delivers 100% of what it promises.
I have never looked back and jumped onto all new technologies Apple throughout.
The company lives from the friends I made over the last decade+. I collaborated always with interesting people for my projects and made friends along the way.
I created about a dozen public apps by that time and many more for myself and my friends and help other (friend-)developers where I could.
Today my apps can support my family with my two daughters."
Box was the most surprising app to me. I created brain teaser from all the things your iPhone can do with such simple graphics yet beautiful graphics - I wished I had that Idea.
I also loved geometry defense, it was a smart game done only by a programmer he used effects to make hand-made graphics look cool.
It took me a year to really create everything needed for Kalea’s Kolors. Besides the actual App I build a LOT of tool for the processing of the 3D designer and illustrator and CG Artist. It was so much work, but worth it :)
I had two user groups in mind: Mandalas are an art by itself, if you see people colorize them it calms them down and creates wonderful beauty, yet never beautiful enough. What we have in mind is a church window and even with the black mandalas that make colors pop it’s never quite as in your imagination when the lights comes through. – SO Kalea’s Kolors actually has Church Window mandalas that really project their colorization with light onto the floor and become partly transparent as it’s colorized.
For children I saw the ones that wanted more. Children want to play and touch and move and do things. I gave them oversized metal toys you can place on your floor using AR or simply use on your device rotate and search for places you have not colorized yet. - My 3 year old daughter Kalea was my first Beta Tester, she could fully use the app without explanation or being able to read - the happiest moment when developing such an app
I have not found any app like Kalea’s Kolors, just 2D coloring books that basically live from the amount of pictures they offered. Some just did boring and basic stuff and some really beautiful and intriguing art, but none something beyond what you get in a paper book - why do I need a photn or tablet then I thought.
Kalea’s Kolors let’s you touch and feel your colorization and experience them in AR, it makes them REAL and thus you can even share them, as stickers (for your preferred perspective) or the actual colorization, so others can look at them on their table.
In addition you get real materials. The object comes to life as you touch it the dull white becomes a metal or wood as it is filled with your colors.
A lot of new categories and art styles, but also more for collaboration. The app already supports SharePlay but I want to support people to colorize huge models together.
I also want to look into using a pencil to actually draw on top of a model :)
Please take a look at Kalea’s Kolor it is different from anything you have known and hopefully is a nice relaxation or gives your kid better spacial thinking.
Give it to your friends to need something to relax or ones with kids :)
Enjoy the new world of 3D coloring. It’s for everybody, whether you want to relax, create art or your kid wants to have fun with colors while improving spatial thinking. Kalea’s Kolors is the first app of its kind and you can be the first to discover it.
Only Kalea’s Kolors Kalea’s Kolors is based on the designs of the french illustrator Gabriel Rebufello. We loved his illustrations so much, that we wanted to create our first 3D coloring book with him - and here it is :)
The designs are created in a complex process that all start with a sketches from Gabriel, we then have it modelized in a feedback-loop with Gabriel to make sure his signature look is kept.
Then Gabriel can add his illustrations to the model and finally adjust the materials to his designs. The whole process is about 50 times as complex as a normal coloring book, but we think it’s worth it – We loved the resulting 3d 3D coloring book so much we named it after our daughter. „Kalea“ is Hawaiian for “filled with joy” and it’s just so appropriate here, too :)
Give it a try - you will love it, too :)
Colorize Together … with SharePlay
If your device has iOS 15 you might have noticed the amazing SharePlay that allows you to start activities together while using FaceTime. Kalea’s Kolors supports SharePlay too and makes it super easy to colorize together. Simply start colorizing while on a FaceTime call no matter if you are in AR (iOS only) or not. You can colorize with friends around the globe.
More and more and more to come … Introducing: „As you wish“
As we put so much work into each single design, we want to focus on what you love. So we start each package with a few samples and let you decide if you want to see more of this kind of art or something else :)
“As you wish” is from the movie “The Princess Bride” where it’s a synonym for “I love you”. We love our customers - so we say we love you by giving you more of what you like.
