Happy Kids Timer Chores - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

We are experienced developers and we’ve worked in different areas, but mostly in banking and finance.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

As experienced developers we are used to dealing with technical issues but developing the app for children was something new for us. We have to cope with mobile stores requirements for children apps and legal requirements protecting children that differ from country to country.

Evoprox is an app development company from Slovakia that builds easy and fun games and apps for kids. Their flagship app Happy Kids Timer is an educational and motivational game. The app is aimed to help kids with morning and evening chores and become more independent in a playful mode.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Messaging apps such as Slack or Google Chat that keep us in touch with our team members and also with families. Fuelio helps us keep track of our car expenses. And of course sport apps, such as Strava or Garmin Connect are a must.

How long have you been working on this app?

We started with the Happy Kids Timer app in 2014 with the focus on morning routine. Any family with kids understands that this the biggest challenge of the day. Later in 2018 we delivered a major update with an evening routine and brand new set of animations.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

First of all we have in mind that our users are little kids. The app is designed for kids 4+ but from our experience we know that younger kids around 2-3 years can operate the app and follow the instructions in the animations. So we keep the app as simple as possible.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

Ads & Animations. We don’t like ads in apps for children. Indeed, we could make money because kids usually randomly tap on ads, but as parents we decided not to have ads even in the free version. Second, we put a lot of effort into designing simple animations and this is something that keeps children focused on their routine. Even though we've been on the market almost for 8 years and there are dozens of routines app for children, as far as we know none of them provides such an experience with animations.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We’ve started with morning routines, later added the evening routine. Plenty of users have requested an afternoon routine. We already have sketches for afternoon activities and are looking forward to starting working on new animations that will also include some outdoor activities. We have big plans to make the app more flexible to let users build their own routines, etc.
