Yes, I’ve been coding since I was 9 years old, worked as an engineer at large companies, and have built multiple apps prior to this one.
Since EteSync as end-to-end encrypted and privacy-respecting, we don’t track our users and can’t access their data. This is a good thing, and why our users love us, but it also makes debugging very hard at times.
EteSync was created by Tom, aka tasn, because he was frustrated with the lack of secure solutions for contacts and calendar sync or even backup. For a short while, there was Flock by the people behind Signal, but unfortunately, it didn't last long.
Tom, as a long time open source contributor, privacy fanatic, and previously a lead developer for SHR, the biggest Openmoko (the freest phone to have existed so far), decided to take matters to his own hands and create EteSync.
Tasks.org – the best tasks (to-do list) app out there!
Etar – an open-source calendar app, is one of my favorites because I live in my calendar and it’s the only app I found with a decent monthly view.
VLC – the world-famous media player.
Roughly 3.5 years.
Data privacy. We live in a world where our data is used to track, analyze, and manipulate us. EteSync was created to enable users to protect themselves and their data. I initially built it for myself and decided to release it to the public when I realised others will find it useful too.
We are the only app that lets you end-to-end encrypt your data. This means that only when you use EteSync your data is saved to “the cloud” in a way that you, and only you, can access it.
We recently released an iOS version of the app. We plan on adding more data types that our users are asking us to add, such as notes.
Please let us known if you think there’s anything we are not doing as well as we should. We are very user centric, and listen to feedback. So don’t hesitate to contact us! You can also join our community chat at https://www.etesync.com/community-chat/
About App:
Secure, end-to-end encrypted, and privacy-respecting sync for Android, the desktop and the web. Currently supports calendars, contacts, and tasks (using OpenTasks), with more on the way.
In order to use this application you need to have an account with EteSync (paid hosting), or run your own instance (free and open source). Check out https://www.etesync.com/ for more information.
Easy to Use
EteSync is very easy to use. It seamlessly integrates with Android so you won't even notice you are using it. Security doesn't always have to come at a cost.
Secure & Open
Thanks to zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption, not even we can see your data. Don't believe us? You shouldn't, just verify yourself, both the client and server are open sourced.
Full History
A full history of your data is saved in an encrypted tamper-proof journal which means you can review, replay and revert any changes you have made at any point in time.
How does it work?
EteSync integrates seamlessly with your existing apps. All you need to do is sign up (or run your own instance), install the app, and enter your password. After that, you will be able to save your contacts, calendar events, and tasks to EteSync using your existing Android apps, and EteSync will transparently encrypt your data and update the change journal in the background. More security, same work-flow.
