Eat Right Now - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?


What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Really listening to users to make sure the user experience was simple and effective. Lots of testing to get to the point where it was really easy to use!

Eat Right Now was created by Dr. Jud Brewer (MD PhD) and the team at MindSciences, based on his work in the field of habit change and the “science of self-mastery”, combining over 20 years of experience with mindfulness training and a career in scientific research. He is passionate about understanding how our brains work, and how to use that knowledge to help people make deep, permanent change in their lives — with the goal of reducing suffering in the world at large.

How long have you been working on this app?

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

Simple, effective habit change without willpower. Losing weight is hard enough, and so many people try to force themselves using willpower and crazy diets, which eventually fail when we encounter negative/stressful emotions: hungry, angry, lonely, tired, etc.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

Eat Right Now is not a typical diet / weight loss app. You don't need to be told what to do -- you've probably tried that many times without any sustained success. But it's not your fault; it's the way your brain is wired. Eat Right Now uses evidence-based mindfulness techniques in a step-by-step process to rewire your brain. You'll reduce emotional eating and all of the negative, guilty behaviors around food... and find you're making healthy choices effortlessly. Stop hating your body and beating yourself up around food, and learn to enjoy meals again. Oh, and lose weight in the process, without a traditional diet.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We're constantly improving the Eat Right Now app, adding new video and audio lessons, and listening to user feedback on how to best improve the interface, while still keeping it simple and effective.
