Ava fertility tracker - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

I have studied electrical and computer engineering, making me familiar with coding and code development. However, in 'Ava' there is a big team of software developers and data scientists who are writing the actual code of the product.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

From a technical perspective the most challenging aspect is to make all different components communicate with each other flawlessly. 'Ava' consists of a bracelet, an app and our back-end. Their coordination requires detailed thinking and consideration of many parameters.

Evangelia Mouriki is a product manager at 'Ava'. She has studied Electrical and Computer Engineering at the 'National Technical University of Athens', Greece, where she grew up, and then moved to Switzerland for her MSc in Management, Technology and Economics. She started working in operations management but soon was intrigued by product management and development and moved to that sector.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

'Instagram' is one of my favorite apps. The design is very simple and the app's very intuitive. There is no need to give any instructions on how to use it and I think this is one of its big successes. 'WhatsApp' is another classic app that I use daily. It perfectly serves the need to communicate fast and easy in groups.

How long have you been working on this app?

I started working on the 'Ava' app in 2016, when we launched our very first version and since then I am working continuously to improve it and to add new features for our users.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

'Ava' is used to track the menstrual cycle of women and to predict and detect their fertile windows. Our goal when working on the product is to make our algorithms as accurate as possible and provide users with results in a comprehensive and useful way. We want women to relax, and let 'Ava' do all the tracking and calculations for them. In general, we want to empower women and help them learn how their body works. This is our driving force for the further development and the new features that will soon be added in the app.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

'Ava' is not just an app. 'Ava' works together with a physical bracelet that tracks multiple physiological parameters during the night. These parameters are sent to our back-end and are assessed by our algorithms that predict and detect the fertile window in each cycle. Our algorithms are developed and tested in clinical studies and this makes me confident that we deliver the best to our users, making this the major difference comparing to any other cycle tracking app. To make it more personal, I am an active user of the bracelet and the app and I find it very convenient and easy to use. Every morning I only have to sync my bracelet and I am ready to start my day.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We are continuously working on improving the 'Ava' app and the overall user experience. Recently we introduced many improvements in the pregnancy mode of the app. The next big project we are working on focuses on the communication between users and their ability to interact more with the app.

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

We are working to make the user experience better and all information regarding this are of extreme value for us. Thus I would kindly ask them to contact us whenever they have feedback for the app. Our decisions are and will be driven by the user requests.
