Angrymals: aim, smash, repeat - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Sure – I started creating some small games and mods around 25 years ago.

I then attained a master's degree in Computer Science and the thesis itself, back in 2009, involved the development of a browser-based 4X MMO.

I worked on several games, exploring the complexity of designing and implementing a wide range of genres: FPS, RTS, RPG, 2d Adventure, the aforementioned browser-based 4X MMO, Shoot’em up, Puzzle; I also enjoyed developing a multiplatform graphical engine capable of deferred rendering, multi-texturing, normal mapping based on Managed DirectX/XNA and HLSL.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Physics determinism.

When playing Angrymals, the two devices involved in a match don’t waste bandwidth and battery to continuously update the simulation on the other device – they simply need to exchange a tiny message with shooting directions, and simulation is carried over identically on both devices. This has the added benefits of allowing match replays, and match resuming and also provides a stronger, automatic anti-cheat check.

The challenges of achieving a fully deterministic simulation were quite tough, though. :)

Daniele Banovaz, the interviewee, is the CEO and Lead Developer of Angrymals. He is a senior software architect and a full-stack developer with almost two decades of experience in .NET and 10 years of experience in Unity 3D.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

When it comes to games, I’d mention Pocket Mine: it has a core loop that is so simple and engaging that kept me hooked for a long time (and a great chiptune soundtrack, also!).

For ordinary apps, definitely Windy Maps (now rebranded into Mapy.cz): I love hiking, and this one has been an excellent companion for hundreds of journeys.

How long have you been working on this app?

The original idea popped out back in 2011, and some small prototypes were created in the subsequent years to pitch to some business incubators. The full time development started in 2014 and further speeded up after the successful crowdfunding campaign we run in 2015.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

The initial drive was to provide a real competitive experience for Angry Birds fans: we thought that just comparing scores was not appealing enough to provide a really challenging multiplayer experience.

We then listened to hundreds of player suggestions and feedback and improved the game accordingly.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

While at a first glance you can sometimes be tempted to dismiss Angrymals as a just-another-Angry-Birds-clone, if you give it a chance you’ll notice we have a completely different game here, similar to nothing else.

The physics-based multiplayer and the thousands of Fortresses created by players provide a new, unexpected experience in every match. The variety of weapons, elemental effects, special moves, building blocks, and game modes provide a deep strategical challenge to whoever wants to dig in a little bit. Ranked mode ensures you’re matched with similar opponents while providing a smooth sense of progression.

Moreover, the tournaments and play-2-earn features that will land soon will give a chance to earn to players that are skilled in battle or creative at creating fortresses.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

The most exciting feature coming soon will be the aforementioned play-2-earn: this will by no means replace/screw up the current way you can play the game now, and will provide new possibilities to players while retaining the huge accessibility this game has in terms of a smooth learning curve and absence of monetary entry barriers.

We’re also hyped to have automated tournaments, to improve the current weekly ones we run “manually” on our Discord server.

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

Try it now, with a friend or two! It’s free to play, and in just a few minutes you can wreak havoc with sperm whales, seagull-driven cars, flaming-meatball storms and explosive rubber-chickens-with-a-pulley-in-the-middle! ;D
