Zenkit - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Yes, before we started creating Zenkit I had already developed and sold a few different software tools (Windows search tools). Zenkit was our first multi-platform app though!

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

The Zenkit mobile app is a progressive web app, which means that it is the normal Zenkit web app packaged in Cordova. The benefit of doing this is that all updates, bug fixes, and security patches are sent to all apps and platforms simultaneously. The biggest challenge with using a PWA was getting Zenkit to look and feel like a native app. We’re still working on it!

Ever since I discovered coding at age 13, I’ve been fascinated by how we can use technology to make the world a better place (cheesy, I know). I went on to study computer science and after a short stint working with startups in Silicon Valley, I returned to Germany to start my own company. Zenkit is the final result of years spent thinking about how to make knowledge accessible and impactful.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

I really like Spotify – it does exactly what you need it to do, and the whole universe of music is right at your fingertips.

How long have you been working on this app?

We have been working on Zenkit for 6 or 7 years now (we were working on it for about 3 years before it was released in October of 2016!)

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

These days, people are often made to use lots of different apps at work – email, task manager, document sharing, CRM, etc. Our main aim with Zenkit is to reduce the number of apps people have to use (and therefore reduce the clutter and stress associated with switching between apps all the time). We want to create the operating system of your business.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

What we’re most proud of is the flexibility Zenkit gives its users. Unlike similar apps on the market, we can quickly create new and interesting ways for our users to engage with their data. We update it frequently and listen closely to our users’ needs. People have the freedom to set up the app exactly the way they want to use it, rather than having to stick to guidelines that we impose on them.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We have very big plans for Zenkit. As I mentioned before, the idea behind this app was to create an operating system that can be used by any business. We will be creating a suite of apps that allow users to address any need they have.
