Strava to Relive - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Of course, I have an IT degree and I have been working as a developer for 15 years. Nowadays, I work as an IT teacher in a high school and in a university. Three years ago, I wanted to develop an Android app only for pleasure, I watched some videos about Android developing, and one month later, I published my first app on Google Play.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Last December, after a Relive app update, I realized that this update had a bug, because of this bug, our app wasn’t working. I asked them to fix it, but they took about a month. For this reason, nowadays, our app has three ways to upload a Strava activity to Relive.

I am an IT teacher and a GPS enthusiast. I bought my first GPS device 20 years ago, I connected it to a PDA (a predecessor of smartphones) and I used them to navigate when driving abroad and to save tracks when hiking or riding. Nowadays, this task is very easy using smartphones and GPS watches. I use them to discover beautiful places following tracks that other people have hiked or cycled before.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

I love Google Maps. I use it a lot when I travel abroad or when I visit someplace in my own country that I don't know.

How long have you been working on this app?

Well, some features of this app are similar to other of our apps, so we have been working on it for about one week.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

Strava and Relive broke their relationship. Relive can’t access Strava activities since last summer as you can read on this webpage:
https://www.relive.cc/support/strava?hl=en

There is a workaround to upload Strava activities to Relive as described on the same page, but in my opinion, these steps are too complicated for users. So I created a simple tool that sends the Strava activity to Relive, in fact, this app does these steps automatically.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

I think there isn’t a similar app. The alternative is to upload the activity manually as described on the Relive website. Users love easy tools, they don’t like to do manual steps like they were IT experts.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

Well, the fact is that I don’t have future plans, only adapt the app to possible changes in Strava and Relive apps. Most tracker apps are able to automatically upload user’s activities to Relive.

This app is a bridge between two different apps.
