Notesnook: Private notes app & online notepad - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Yes. Before we started work on Notesnook, we had worked on several other apps like Streetwriters (unpublished since a year ago) and a few other utility apps. I started coding when I was in 8th grade inspired by my brother. My first language of choice was C++ but I have since migrated to C# & Javascript - both of which have been extremely useful in making Notesnook what it is now.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Off the top of my head, I'd say it was probably the effort we put into making Notesnook cross-platform that was the most challenging. All the apps we had developed before were focused on a single platform: Android but this time we decided to make it truly cross platform. We wanted to make everything feel as native as possible - from designing the UI to encryption, every aspect of the application needed to be developed for 3 separate platforms. This was a huge undertaking but we made it possible.

I am Abdullah Atta, CEO & Co-founder of Streetwriters, and the brain and brawn behind Notesnook. When I am not at the keyboard coding away, I am either reading or meditating. My favorite book to date is probably Wheel of Time (I am really excited about the Amazon's upcoming TV Series), and as you can guess, I love fantasy. I am not a huge fan of social media platforms - mostly because of privacy issues they are riddled with. You can reach out to me at [email protected]

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Standard Notes was a great inspiration while making Notesnook. You could say it was the reason Notesnook came into this world. Aside from that, I recently found out about Bookshelf that helps me manage my reading, much better than Goodreads for management, with an amazing UI. Lastly, Snapdrop & Wormhole.app have been my daily companions for transferring files and data all over the world to different people.

How long have you been working on this app?

We started out in December 2019. I'd say we are getting closer to 2 years now.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

Privacy, privacy, privacy. There are many note taking apps out there, of course, but none take users' privacy seriously; and those that do have horrible user experiences. With Notesnook our goal was to create a privacy respecting note taking app that works on all platforms seamlessly and offer it for an affordable price.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

In a word: security. In Notesnook, we want you, the user, to be in control. This means that there is simply no way we can read your data. This is in striking contrast to many other apps who control all your data. The thing I am most proud of is how we have made encrypted syncing possible in an extremely secure way across any kind of platform. It doesn't matter if you are on PC, Mobile, Tablet, or Mac, your notes will always be with you.

However, in terms of innovation, we want to prove to everyone that it is possible to implement any kind of feature in a privacy respecting app. A lot of the big companies make excuses like, "Oh but if we go private, we won't be able to offer this or that" but I think that's just a different way of saying, "You aren't important, your data is".

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

Oh my. We have a LOT of plans. You can check our official roadmap here: https://docs.notesnook.com/roadmap

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

As a businessman, I'd say, go buy the app haha. Seriously though, take a moment and try out Notesnook - you won't regret it. I heartily believe that everyone deserves their privacy so that's all I ask: try out the app and share it with the people you care about.
