NeuroMind - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

I am a medical doctor and autodidactic coder. I started in HTML, then PHP, and later, mobile tech.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

The required regulatory affairs, mainly on medical device directives! :-)

Pieter Kubben is a staff neurosurgeon who works at the Maastricht University Medical Center in The Netherlands and performed a Ph.D. thesis on glioma surgery with intraoperative MRI.

As a hobby, he started developing software for mobile computing and clinical decision support. Starting in 2001, he has won two international awards for his efforts in PHP & MySQL.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Mainly those apps which make my life easier. In daily practice, I use WhatsApp, Siilo, Calendar, and (tip!) Things the most (all iPhone.)

How long have you been working on this app?

The first version of NeuroMind was released back in 2010. Since then, many revisions have passed. The current brand new version appearing Q2 2022 has been built from scratch using Flutter!

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

My personal need as a neurosurgeon: Get support with taking complex decisions and applying evidence-based medicine.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

For neurosurgery, this app has the most and the most relevant content and has become the #1 app for neurosurgery worldwide.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

Later this year, we’ll be adding personalization features, with more ideas still to be discussed :-)
