Galarm – Alarms and Reminders - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Yes, indeed. I have been developing and managing software development projects since 1994. My 25 years of software development experience includes product design, development, management, and global support operations in the areas of network engineering and planning, performance and configuration management, discrete event simulation and modeling, and mobile application development and cloud hosting. In the process, I have authored 24 U.S. Patents in these areas, including one that is the technology behind 'Galarm'. Check out more at here.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

First of all, this is the first mobile app that I was designing and managing. So, there were lots of exciting new technologies and processes to learn in the whole app development and publishing ecosystem. With the two major platforms, iOS and Android, there were independent learning curves to understand the best practices and conventions across them, and conforming to create the best user experience for both operating systems.

With the experience of creating bug-free software for large enterprises, involving heavy testing and quality assurance, we performed rigorous testing and validation of our app to create stable releases, including an excellent 6-month beta phase before launching.

Pradeep has 25 years of experience in product design, software development, management and support in the areas of network engineering, operations, and planning. Pradeep is currently pursuing his passion for building mobile applications to simplify lifestyle. Pradeep holds a bachelor's degree from Delhi College of Engineering (India), and a master's degree in electrical engineering from Clemson University (USA). Pradeep has co-authored more than 25 U.S. Patents, with his most recent invention forming the core idea behind 'Galarm'.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

'WhatsApp' - because it’s free and contains no ads! However, more importantly, its user interface is optimized for the use case for which the app was built -- no distractions! The concept that the app should be primarily build to solely serve the main use case behind the app and not distract the user is exemplified well by this app. 'Skype' - free app, clean interface, nice welcome screens. 'LinkedIn' - powerful, feature-rich interface. 'Facebook' - again powerful, rich medley of features organized seamlessly into one app. 'SmugMug' - great photo sharing site. 'Bublup' (in beta) - all my content in one place, “my visual cloud”: simple, yet powerful interface to organize and share.

How long have you been working on this app?

Since August 2016. We launched the beta on April 1, 2017, and ran a successful beta phase till September 2017, which is when we launched it for public download. We have had many revisions since the public launch as well. So, in all, I have been working on it for a year before its launch and then for another year after its public launch. The amount of enthusiasm for encouragement for this app has motivated me to keep adding more productivity features to it.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

Most of us rely on some kind of alarm or reminder system to stay on top of our busy lives. From waking up in the morning, to taking medicines on time, to not being late, for fun and social outings, alarm clocks and alarm apps play the important role of a personal assistant.

Yet, even with alarms, we still rely on people around us to remind us of important things, e.g: many of us will understand when I say "Mom, if I am not up by 7:15 AM, please wake me up!", or "Honey, don't forget to bring diapers on your way back from work.", or "Remind me to buy the concert tickets when the ticket sales open next Thursday."

Our reliance on each other to get stuff done has always been a comforting source of assurance that we will never miss anything. With the proliferation of smartphones and apps, we are connected with our contacts like never before. If the alarm clock can benefit from one's social network, it would make this reliance very strong and independent of physical proximity. This is where 'Galarm' enters and helps us be more productive than ever before.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

First of all, there are no apps in the market that schedule and handle alarms in the way 'Galarm' does. The fact that I have a U.S. Patent on the technology behind 'Galarm' itself is proof that no one has thought of such use cases.

Galarm’s concept that it allows you to include participants in your alarms and reminders, thereby allowing you to rely on your contacts anywhere in the world, has been embraced and appreciated by its user community. In the first year of the app's release, it has been installed in over 100 countries. We have received exciting feedback from people all over the world - many of them thanking 'Galarm' for its features. It is so great to hear that someone is keeping track of their health and fitness using 'Galarm', or students that are using 'Galarm' to manage their studies and projects, or people that are staying on top of their social calendar using social alarms.

I have personally responded to each and every review on the App Store (~50) or the Play Store (~600). Every time I get an app review, I feel proud of 'Galarm' and get more motivated to keep improving. The reviews indicate that whilst using 'Galarm', kids are relying on their parents to wake them up on time, people are reminding loved ones to take their medications in a timely manner, and friends are organizing fun, group events.

Thanks to the user community for embracing and promoting 'Galarm'.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

'Galarm' continues to innovate and release new features. We have several exciting features lined up like a new improved interface for Android, a notification tab to give a single place listing of all missed alarms or system alerts. We also have plans to offer history of how a user responded to a repeating alarm. This will greatly help in seeing how many times one missed an alarm or failed to acknowledge.

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

'Galarm' is an innovative alarm clock...one with a social twist! While the app is fully functional in a standalone basis, if you use the social aspects of it by registering the app and share it with others, you can get a good experience and benefit from its social alarm features. If you have any ideas for improvements or something that you feel should be offered within the app, please send us feedback. In addition to our internal R&D and innovation, we have improved 'Galarm' and added more features to it using active feedback from our user community. Thanks for your support!
