We had almost no coding experience prior to starting FlowSavvy. I had taken just one entry level web development class in college, and my brother had done a small amount of coding in his physics classes. Most of our coding skills came from working on FlowSavvy.
- Getting people to use it at the start when it looked like an app from the 90s and was only available in a browser
- Creating a fast, reliable algorithm that schedules like a human would, and then making that sync with external calendar apps in an efficient way.
The interviewee, Jacob Barnes, is one of the Co-Founders of FlowSavvy.
FlowSavvy is an automatic time-blocking app, meaning you can just enter your tasks into your To-Do list, and FlowSavvy will plan time for everything in your calendar. It really is "time-blocking on easy mode".
- Mealime: Makes groceries take a fraction of the time. Choose your meals, it creates your shopping list, and then it integrates with Walmart so you can either do delivery or free pickup.
- Opal: Blocks apps on my phone/computer, and if I want to unblock them, I have to set a time for how long they should be unblocked for. Much better than iPhone screentime restrictions.
This app helped break my phone addiction.
- Spotify: Gotta have music
We started it as a side-project in Dec 2019, got more serious about it 6-12 months after that, and have now been working on it full time since mid-2023.
Time-blocking tasks into your calendar manually is a HUGE pain. People that understand the benefits of time-blocking and want to time-block their tasks in their calendar have no easy way to do so, so they inevitably give up on time-blocking after it becomes too tedious. FlowSavvy gives you instant and automatic time-blocking, so you can still get the benefits of time-blocking without taking an hour every week to plan everything out and hope nothing changes.
What makes FlowSavvy different from similar apps is that it's just so simple and easy to use. Other automatic time-blockers are packed to the brim with customization options and features, which is great for some people. For a lot of people though, they just want something that's as easy to use as any regular calendar app and doesn't have a huge learning curve. No other automatic time-blocking app is as easy to use as FlowSavvy.
Our next release will add the ability to tag and filter tasks in the ToDo list so users can stay a little more organized instead of using one ToDo list. At the same time, we'll also be releasing a search feature so users can quickly find tasks and events.
Future projects will likely include more integrations with other calendar and task management apps and limited offline capabilities. Our plans for the future are to add features that will make the app more useful for people without making it more complicated to use.
Let us know what you think, whether positive or negative! We love hearing peoples' thoughts on why FlowSavvy does or does not work for them, because that helps us know how we can improve the app for everyone. We'd love to hear from you!
