Citation Generator - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

No. I did not have prior coding experience. I’m all self-taught. The only thing that was guiding me through was the idea for the app.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

The hardest part was learning how to build apps natively. The app was first created on Android using Java. I further expanded and learned how to code in objective-c for iOS, macOS, and C# for Windows 8 and now only on Windows 10.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Besides my other apps? I thrive on listening to music so Apple Music app is definitely a must, GPS Waze to get me around, and MyFitnessPal to make sure I’m eating right.

How long have you been working on this app?

Since December 2012 and still going.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

The problem is, students are not aware of how to properly cite from different sources. American Psychological Association (APA) releases manuals on how to properly write in APA format essays. Schools and colleges require students to comply with these APA guidelines. Students don’t have time to sit around and read a 100+ page manual. The solution I came up with was the Citation Generator. An app that shows how to format and structure in-text citations, references, and essay outline.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

Citation Generator is better because it was built natively for each platform and always making sure the accuracy of the results. The app does not require the need for internet. I think that is the biggest feature because of a lot of schools in certain buildings cut off internet access. Generated citations are saved in a database on the user device where it can be later reviewed, shared, and even printed if needed. It is a testament to its accuracy when teachers and schools are downloading the app in high volumes.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

Future plans are to keep on improving, adapting to new APA editions, and adding more sources.

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

It needs more app reviews. Usually users do not review apps unless it is really bad but for the benefits that all my users are gaining I invite you to place a review. Share the app with your fellow students and teachers. I’m always open for feedback and feature requests as well.
