After Action – Sports Team Feedback - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

I have been coding since high school and after graduating from university I worked on several indie game projects before moving over to app development.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Our app is available on iOS and Google Play as well as the web browser so creating a consistent experience across all three platforms was always a challenge.

Matt is a co-Founder and Senior Developer at After Action where he handles all aspects of development from design to implementation. Prior to that, Matt graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Graphics Technology from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

TeamSnap is great for sports team management and we integrate with them to import teams directly into After Action.

How long have you been working on this app?

I was with After Action from the inception over five years ago.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

On a team, it’s very natural to want to know where you stand. We set out to help players and coaches know their status within the group. From there improvement is a lot easier. So we wanted to build something to help coaches and players get on the same page. After Action is simply a vector for quick and efficient communication.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

After Action is a conversation starter for performance improvement - basically it helps coaches coach. We are proudest of our player feedback on the app. They love it. Regularly hearing from your coach is catnip for a player. They can’t get enough.

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We are a huge hit with soccer teams. We would like to spread the word to other sports as well. Just this week we’ve heard from lacrosse teams, a volleyball team and even a water polo team. Regarding new features, we are very reactive to feedback from coaches. Feedback informs behavior - sounds familiar, right? We are looking forward to seeing what we hear from non-soccer coaches about what are the best ways to connect with players. We know soccer well - we used to coach soccer at the college level and one of my co-founders is a former pro. Developing our expertise into more sports is the plan.
