ACT iCoach: Acceptance Commitment Therapy App - Interview with the developer of a fantastic app

Did you have any prior development or coding experience?

Yes. I have been building software products across various industries for the last 20 years.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?

Having worked in a strictly corporate environment in the past, bringing the empathy aspect to products in the behavioral health space is always a challenge.

Gana is the founder and CEO of Swasth. Having seen family members and close friends struggle with depression, substance abuse, and being personally affected by it, he started Swasth. Swasth is transforming behavioral health care by creating a seamless experience for clients, providers, and employers. Using technology within the context of evidence-based treatments, Swasth connects clients to behavioral health providers and treatments that work, making the experience personalized and effective.

Gana has a technology background having built software products for a wide range of industries. He holds two Engineering degrees and an MBA from UPenn / Wharton.

An avid runner, he has run all six world marathon majors in a single year.

Name a few of your favorite apps and reason you love them.

Google Maps – Takes me where I want to go and it almost always is right.
Trello – Simplicity and a real productivity tool.
DBT Coach – The best and most comprehensive Evidence-Based therapy app.

How long have you been working on this app?

About 4 months. But we’ve built several other evidence-based therapy apps which we could lean on.

What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?

The users of an app like this are vulnerable. So we had always put empathy at the forefront and particular attention to simplicity and ease of use. Of course, making it aesthetically pleasing is important too while not losing the functionality.

In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.

Most other apps only touch parts of these evidence-based treatment modalities. So it's all in bits and pieces. One particular focus during development was to make the app comprehensive and cover all aspects of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).

What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?

We are working towards a more holistic health app combining aspects of nutrition, sleep, activities, etc. with ACT.

Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?

We would like to build awareness about evidence-based treatment modalities and ACT is one of them. Since this is the only comprehensive app for ACT, we would like users to spread the word about the app so that a much wider audience can benefit from it.
