This is the third game we have developed here at Didactoons. So I was familiar with many of the trickiest aspects of game development.
This time, we opted for a procedural music integration. Every scene in the menu has its own variation of the main theme. Users can navigate through the scenes and music transforms on the fly. Adjusting the different audio clips to activate at the right time required some fine-tuning.
David Rioja is a video game developer and one of the founders at Didactoons Games, a startup specialized in educational video games. He graduated in Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Alcalá where he later completed his studies with a Master's Degree in Video Game Production.
I remember enjoying a lot with Badland (Frogmind) and Monument Valley (ustwo games). I think both games are artistically brilliant and very engaging.
Developing Buddy School took nine months. We were a team of three at the time.
We wanted to make a fun yet educational app, whose difficulty is adapted to the age and abilities of the child to keep them motivated.
I'm happy with the uniqueness of the game. The music, the characters, and even the exercises make me feel happy every time I have to test it.
We want to add exercises that could be a challenge to older players, such as column additions and subtractions o advanced memory tests.
I’d ask them to give us feedback, writing a review or sending us a mail. The best part of my job is replying to user comments and reviews. Knowing that Buddy is helping children to improve their skills make me feel my work is meaningful. In the other hand, very often user’s suggestions have helped us to improve the game.
